Stella’s Writing Meta

Posted by Probablepossible on Sep 8, 2007 in Blogging |

has just posted an Open letter to bad fic writers and it’s worth a read, regardless of how well you write. She listed a couple of mistakes that I’ve been making recently, and I appreciate the reminder.

Amateur fic writers like what we are, are in a very delicate spot when it comes to critiquing our friends work– and it’s really hard to get straight honest critique for yourself, even if you ask for it. I don’t know what to do about it, frankly. I hold myself to impossibly high standards. Mailor, Burroughs, Nabokov, L’Engle (RIP), Hoban, are among my heroes, and I want to count myself in that number, yannowadimean?

What I really need now, are some real classes. Except that I write smut. And I do not want to not write smut. The last time I was invited to read before a group… well.

This is going to be a long post, I am afraid, by the time I’ve finished it. I want to list some faults that I see in beginning writers, and list some recources for those of us who want to continue to hone our skills.
