these “solar powered” water-dwelling critters suck the chloroplasts out of algeas and keep them alive in their own bodies, living off the sugars the chloroplasts produce- just like a plant would.
To do this, they have actually incorporated plant DNA into their genomes. Chloroplasts are dependent on proteins that a plant cell produces. Pretty cool! A little bit slug, a little bit plant- and simply gorgeous!
