notes on racefail09
here’s the thing; when, in this long and ugly discussion have you seen a white person begin by apologising for stepping on someone’s face first,(before continuing the discussion)– and then (after apologising), perhaps, saying; "You know, I can’t help but react to the word ‘racist’ with defensive anger" (after acknowledging the insulted person’s anger as legitimate ?
(I have enlarged upon that question with bolds and parenthises. If my meaning is in any way still unclear, please let me know, and i will try to find a bigger hammer)
I can tell you how many times I saw it;
Once. ONNNNCE!!!!
And that was Elizabeth Bear, and she got shouted down by her "supporters."
And really that’s been an important issue in this long and ugly and getting uglier misunderstanding. These liberals who are being confronted on their assumptions have, all of them, dug in their heels and taken the attitude that, until the antiracists admit their guilt in using such a horrible word, there will be no apology for nothing.
The word "racist" is so terribly horrible that it trumps whatever behavior occasioned the word in the first place.
Handy, isn’t it?

Yes. And Yes.
ANd alternately, when three (or so) people arguing on the anti-racist side (I am not going to even try to identify their race because I am not sure I know/or remember, nor am I sure it’s important at this point) inadvertently triggered rozk, they all apologized.
And don’t even get me started on WillS who is claiming some form of trauma for the use of the word “racist” (I clicked a link, I could not click away in time), and going around lecturing people on what language to use so that white people who use racist language will listen nicely to them….*snorts*
See, I did that once, myself, bridled at the word the described my deed. For about one evening. It really isn’t that difficult a concept, and I’m in the same age group.
Also, the fun part is, you don’t even have to wait for anyone to actually *use* the word racist. Even if someone says something like “look, I don’t know if you knew this, but that’s a problematic stereotype with a long history,” that’s just as bad.
You (or your friends) can *still* jump back with “You’re wrong, I’m/She’s a good person, therefore I/she could never have used a problematic stereotype in such a way. If you disagree, you are calling me/her a racist, how dare you.”

It’s like a “get out of jail free” card. After someone implies that you did something you need to apologize for, you’re allowed to do/say whatever you want to them. By speaking up and saying “this hurts me,” they have made it clear that they are evil, awful people who deserve whatever they get.
I really detest blind loyalty. If I were writing ten commandments, I’d list it as a sin.
