I recommend "The Writer's Little Helper"
I have about a bazillion "how to write’ books, because people always want to give you something they know you can use, right? And most of them, I crack once and skim through and put on the shelf.
But a few weeks ago, a whole lot of folks at all agreed that this book had some very simple and useable tips for novel-writing. For four bucks total, I ordered it off amazon– used books section, natch, and although it took so long to arrive that i had forgotten all about it when it did show up– I think it’s going to get read cover to cover, guys, i really do.
it’s written in short bursts for us internet ADD types, and it includes wonderful diagrams and examples, a few ahporisms. It’s heavy on the extra-kewt Illustrator graphics, but it really condenses a lot of theory into the cute.
Best 47 cents plus shipping you’ll ever spend, i swear. *grin*
"Story is what happens to people."

Sounds good to me so far. Some of the Amazon reviews are interesting, talking about his previous books.
