Why does Jack Sparrow wear dreadlocks? Because Johnny Depp is a romantic who likes to play dress-up. But why would a pirate wear them, really?

Marietta slid a hand under Jack’s neck, sniffed the perfume in his hair.
“What have ye been doing, laddie? Your bonny locks-”
“Tis practical, savvy? The wind on the high seas fair whips it about so to blind you, otherwise. Some ladies in Madagascar made the plaits for me, and they make their own tangles now.”He fingered one thick black dreadlock, tickled her face with it.
“And what’s wrong with a tarred pigtail then?”
“Ah, yes.” Jack’s face closed down. “Regulation pigtail, pulled so tight as you never can close your eyes again. Aye sir, no sir, your station is in the mizzen, stay off the main deck boy! Mind your place and mend your manners. The swag ain’t yours, boy, it’s for your betters.
“Tis the mark of a slave, not a man who’s made himself, savvy? My father never made his men wear a pigtail, and he runs tight ships.”
