Geeky Whee!

Last night, I had dinner with a noted anthropologist  who happens to be my boss, and a rocket scientist  who happens to be an absolute doll, and a warm and wonderful conversationalist. We talked about fractals and the Beatles and T.S Elliot, while Dr. Goldschmidt watched us, grinning as if he were watching a TV show.

After dinner, Dr Russell and I went to Cal Tech to hear Gentry Lee talk about the potential for extraterrestrial contact.
The talk was very entertaining– not only does Dr. Lee have a delivery that reminded me of Gary Oldman, or maybe vice versa, but Dr. Russell didn’t agree with everything the man said, and I would hear muffled snorts and huffs of bridlement every once in a while.

This is a "Snub Cube" and the heart of the Beckman Institute’s exquisite quad. And this is the reason why it’s featured in such a way;

    Now *that’s* what I call a geeky fountain.
    Like something you’d see on Vulcan.
    Sigh.
    I feel better now…
    And the evening soudned wonderful!

    Sounds like it was a very good time! Pleasant, intelligent dinner conversation is sometimes hard to come by. And yes, I adore the geeky fountain. XD

  • How cool is that? It sounds like a lovely and fascinating time. I wrote my final paper in sociology on the impact that cognizant alien life would have on world religion. :)

      It was so very cool, and I’m not surprised, somehow, that your paper was…
      What were your conclusions? :)

      • Well, it varied from different interpretations of Christian text, i.e. flaming chariots in the sky=spaceships and pillars of flame etc, to how the die-hard Muslims would be fucked. Their dogma, which from what I’ve seen, seems to be taken literally, says that all knowledge that is known, or ever to be known is in the Koran. Their text makes no mention of alien life.The “heathens” would be fine, of course.
        Actually, when I wrote it, I wish that I’d had Gardner’s Genesis of the Grail Kings to reference. He proposes that we were cloned by the Annunaki, an advanced race that came to earth to mine gold to fill in holes in their own atmosphere. It also explains why there is such a difference in the God of the Old Testament and the New, because they were two separate entities. There’s loads of other supposition which sounds wild, but he backs it up with scientific fact. It’s not all about “revelations” and “dreams” like Z. Stitchen, or historical based fiction like Von Daniken. Also, he proposes that there is no evidence of a missing link because there isn’t one. That we are a different race.
        OOh, I think I just geeked out and need to go put on my tinfoil hat. LOL.
        (Do accept my apologies, as I believe this is rife with spelling errors, but I’m typing on the fly.)
