Emergency in Portland…
A almost-20-year-old and unfortunately naive young woman is kinda stranded there with no money for her rent. She thought she had a job, but not so. Not much training– she should have started school, but didn’t. *rolls eyes*
She has some hard knocks ahead of her, god knows! And she needs a job toot sweet. And a somewhat sympathetic ear….
Anyone in the area who wants to befriend a smart, temperamental cartoonist?

The only person I know in Portland is a one-legged dyke accordionist. No, really. Nomy is extremely cool, but she’s in desperate financial straits herself, as far as I know. I wish I had better resources to offer Ms. C.
You poor thing! no pun intended, I’ll listen to all your troubles. I to am looking for a job too. So…what’s up?
Not me– I’m not quite as down and out, much further south, and many years older to boot… *G*
Just hoping to help her find a toehold where she is.
She seems pretty determined, I’ll say that for her!

Has she started on any of the official help available to her?
Does she have anybody to go home to?
yeah, she could come home — she’s my daughter… But she wants to get through this and make it on her own for a while first. It’s just been way tougher for her than even I expected, combining the normal new-town discomforts with a boyfriend who is just not in shape, evidently, to be supportive or even a boyfriend at all. They went to portland together, and the first thing he did when they got there was tell her he didn’t want to live with her. So– two rents instead of one… and no company from the guy who, supposedly, loves you…
What’s going through his mind, I hate to think– I’m worried for him, too.
There’s a whole lot of sf & f peeps in Portland area, but their help tends to be more on the long-term range–”this company likes these kinds of skills”. If she has computer graphics experience of any depth, and she has decent drawing skills, she might be able to start applying for jobs doing Silicon Forest-type graphix. Gaming companies, for one, want folks who can draw. However, they also don’t want to pay to get you trained on higher level skills like Photoshop and 3-D animation, they want you to get trained on your own hook first. They tend to be long hours for salary.
If she has a portfolio she might be able to shop around with print/design shops.
Getting on at a copy shop (easier, due to rapid turnover) is one way to get started on that, even if it’s a hhhhorrible job. If it were me, I’d put some effort into that one just to make sure I had money to eat.
And the BF sounds like he’s gonna be having major issues, sorry.
I was trying to think of anybody I knew in the area. Kiya is further north, I believe; I think is in that area, don’t know if it might help to send a pm requesting any good advice she could offer, def. of the fannish persuasion.

Oh, that sucks. All I can offer are my prayers. Sounds hokey, but it might help, wouldn’t hurt.
Am I ebil if I’m pissed off at Mr. Boyfriend? *sigh*
