  • cesperanza says; Drag Queens. (some) gay men have created a really distinctive and important form of cultural expression, saying things they couldn’t say otherwise, through the adoption of female avatars from popular culture. And it seems to me that gay men should understand that (some) women have created a different and yet equally important form of cultural expression, saying things they couldn’t say otherwise, by adopting male avatars.

Personally, I’m looking forward to the day when fewer women need to pretend to be men in order to face being human; until that day though, many women will write slash. And perhaps the day will come when more men won’t need to drag up in order to be flamboyantly themselves.

  • On that note, I remember finding Pat Califia. She wrote; Macho Sluts. Doc and Fluff. Doing it For Daddy. She was butch, powerful, assertive, switchy, omnisexual. For me, born female and resigned to dealing by way of humor, intellectualisation, and denial. she gave me a model of what I could be in this body. I could use my female body in masculine ways. Pat was someone who modeled that for me. Hell, she was so damn good at it she was the Advocate’s gay sex advisor for years.

And then she went into transition and became Patrick. I can’t blame him– he did it because he could. But shit. Maybe… maybe humor denial etc, don’t work so well.

  • When i went to the wikipedia entry on Califia, I noticed that the masculine pronoun was in use from birth onward. I think that’s insulting and dismissive of the butch woman she was. The discussion on the matter is a masterpiece of what happens when we forget what PC actually means; I created a wikipedia account and changed the pronouns prior to transition to accurately reflect historic reality.
  • For my reasons why "Lesbian Porn" does not map onto slash, and why even the sloppiest gooiest slash is still better than "lesbian porn," I can give no better examples than the general grade of amateur, mostly male-written, fiction contained here at literotica.com. Go ahead, pick a link, any link. I double dog dare you.
