This is true. And actually, I did imagine I knew them, for the purposes of that story. That's exactly what writers do-- imagine. And I should have said that, all the way through this post-- only of course, I was imagining while I wrote it! But my imagination was also based on research. There are a number of biographies and memoirs of Marlon Brando, and there is an awful lot of agreement among them. Depp is remarkably honest in his interviews, and other people, who do know him, have mentioned his relationship with Brando as something very special. I am very very uncomfortable with the idea of writing fiction-- especially fiction about our most intimate moments-- about real people. This is the only time I've done so, and I was not prepared for the force of the vision that hit me. I wuz forced to write it, honest! *wondering if the excuse works*

What the hell do you really know about either one of these men other than what you suppose you know based on observation and too many viewings of their movies? At best, you have your idea of them, but it’s not much more than that. Do you really imagine you know (or in Brando’s case, ‘knew’) them?
